Sustainable and Resilient Cities

Dockside croppedThe recognition that the majority of human beings live in cities and that today’s urban population is expected to nearly double in the next several decades, has raised the visibility of the importance of how we plan, design and operate cities as being a keystone in achieving sustainable development in the 21st century.  While early work on sustainable cities often focused on how to mitigate environmental or social problems, today the element of resiliency has been added, recognizing the many changes that lie ahead as populations grow, demographics shift, technology evolves and the climate changes.

EDRS has always advocated for an integrated view of all elements of a city in achieving sustainability in its provision of resources, its advisory roles, and in its educational programming.
